Congratulations to our own amazing member, Mary Kennedy, on receiving the Ella Grasso Award.
On September 9th, in Southington, CT, Mary Kennedy of Old Saybrook received the Ella T. Grasso Leadership Award in recognition of her leadership, volunteerism and service to the Democratic Party. Mary started in politics as the Treasurer to the National Young Democrats and has been involved in all Presidential campaigns including those of Kennedy, Johnson and Humphrey. She is active in all local races as well, from the top of the ticket all the way down, and has been coined the “energizer bunny” of the Old Saybrook DTC. She has worked tirelessly to do phone banks, mailings, letters, and canvassing to ensure that qualified candidates are elected to serve our communities. In addition to politics, Mary has had a distinguished career in Nursing. She became a Registered Nurse in 1948, and received a Master’s Degree in Psychiatric Nursing from Yale in 1977. She retired from Nursing at age 88, which leaves her additional time for community service and politics on our town Nursing Board, and the Shoreline League of Democratic Women, the Old Saybrook Historic District Commission and the Old Saybrook Democratic Town Committee.
