FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE…
OLD SAYBROOK, CT, March 28, 2024 — The Executive Board of the Old Saybrook Democratic Town Committee (OSDTC) has prepared a statement in response to the town’s announcement of Chief Michael Spera’s retirement.
Please contact the OSDTC Press Office for further comment.
For the last four years, the Police Commission, led by its chair, Alfred (Chub) Wilcox, and a Democratic majority have worked to address the serious concerns our community had about the leadership of the Old Saybrook Police Department bringing greater transparency and accountability to its work. This culminated in a call for an independent study and its implementation. After receiving what can only be described as a deeply concerning report (PERF), members of the Police Commission have met no fewer than a dozen times to constructively address the recommendations. They have sought community input and legal counsel. Now, we believe, the people of Old Saybrook have the opportunity to move past some of the concerns, implement the best of the recommendations and put in place the police leadership our town deserves. In addition to the Police Commission, the Old Saybrook Democratic Town Committee wishes to thank First Selectman, Carl Fortuna and the brave men and women of the OSPD who guard the public’s safety.
