Do Something

Are you feeling…outraged, scared, motivated to DO SOMETHING?

The first three weeks of the Trump/Musk administration have been a firehouse attack on our democracy. Almost all of their actions are unlawful and unconstitutional. They are testing the very foundation of our governing system. The cruelty and pettiness of some of their actions seems to be the point.

So what can we do?

March and Protest

Our Facebook page will keep you abreast of any and all local/state opportunities but you can also check out FiftyFiftyOne and their events page.

Call Your Federal Representatives

Our representatives (Murphy, Blumenthal, Courtney) need to be thanked when they do something we like (vote, speak out) and challenged to do the right thing when they might not. Recently the DTC expressed displeasure with Joe Courtney’s affirmative vote on Laken-Riley bill. His response was less than satisfactory but he did respond!

Get in the habit of calling someone everyday. Make your coffee or tea. Consider the latest headlines (if you dare) and pick up your phone.

Senator Blumenthal – 202-224-2823

Senator Murphy – 202-224-4041

Congressman Courtney – 202-225-2076

You may find it more effective to use an app like Call5. This app lays out various issues, provides valuable background information for each topic and gives you a script for your call.

Engage Your Friends, Former Neighbors, Family in Red States

You may feel limited in your ability to push back on the Trump/Musk agenda in Washington because all our Representatives at the federal level are Democrats. However, everyone of us has friend, relatives, former neighbors in Red Districts. Let them know they can make a difference by calling their federal representatives and share the Call5 app with them

Demand to Know What Devin Carney Thinks

Our current state Representative is a Republican who barely won re-election. As with other Connecticut Republicans he is under pressure to become “more MAGA” We are watching the positions he takes very carefully. He recently co-sponsored a Lakin-Riley like bill that would weaken Connecticut’s Trust Act that keeps local police from doing ICE’s job. Whenever there is action in Washington (or by CT Republicans) that you don’t like, you can contact to Devin at devin.carney@housegop.ct.gov or (860) 240-8700.

Boycott Businesses

Many corporations that previously opposed Trump/Musk policies are now falling in line. We always people to shop locally but you can also boycott firms that don’t align with your values. Any national boycotts will be listed on our website but you can also check here for more information

Volunteer to Help Your Neighbors

The current draft of the Republican budget calls for gut-wrenching cuts to Food Assistance programs of all types. Non-profits that support marginalized people and communities are losing their funding. Now is the time to lean in. There are dozens of organizations that make a difference and need your help. Volunteer. Donate.

Common Good Gardens will be planting soon and they deliver nearly 10,000 pounds of food to soup kitchens and pantries.

Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries delivered more than 1.7 million pounds of food and served more than 100,000 meals.

The Estuary leads the local Meals on Wheels program and delivered over 100,000 meals to needy seniors in their homes.

Work to Elect Democrats

We can’t wait until 2026 to turn the tide. Even in 2025 there are elections that could have national implications. The Republican majority in the House is razor thin and two from Florida have already resigned. These are tough districts (R+19 and R+14) but never say never. We expect a third resignation when Elise Stefanik (New York, R+9) gets confirmed. In addition, we have an all important Supreme Court election in Wisconsin. Winning would allow us to hold the majority. And don’t forget critical bellweather races for Governor in Virginia and New Jersey later this year. Winning big in these large states would set the stage for momentum going in to 2026.
